What are hives?
Urticaria, also known as hives, are patches of itchy raised areas on your skin that can range in size and appear anywhere on your body. They can appear suddenly and go away quickly. Some people have chronic urticaria that can last for weeks, months, or even years. Hives are not permanent and not contagious, but they can be very uncomfortable.
What causes hives?
Many things can trigger urticaria. Common causes include:
- Food allergies
- Environmental allergies
- Medication allergies
- Insect stings
- Exposure to the cold
- Heat or exercise
- Physical pressure on your skin
- Bacterial or viral infection
- Stress or anxiety
How are hives diagnosed?
Different testing may be indicated for different circumstances of urticaria, so a thorough history and physical is important. If you have any pictures of your rash, it can be helpful to bring those with to your visit to show your allergist. Testing may include skin or blood testing to help accurately pinpoint your urticaria trigger.
How are hives treated?
