What are metal allergies?

Metal allergies are hypersensitivity reactions to certain metals that can cause skin irritation, itching, redness, blistering, and fluid-filled bumps. 

Common Metals that Cause Allergic Reactions

Common metals that can cause allergic reactions include:

  • Nickel
  • Chromium
  • Cobalt
  • Gold

What can trigger metal allergies?

These allergies can be triggered by direct contact with the following:

  • Metal jewelry
  • Clothing fasteners
  • Metal tools
  • Metal implants, such as orthopedic implants or dental fillings
  • Testing 

Skin testing is available to see which metals you are allergic to. 

Treatment for Metal Allergies

Treatment typically involves avoiding contact with the offending metal and using topical corticosteroids or antihistamines to reduce symptoms.
