Postnasal Drip

What is postnasal drip?

Postnasal drip, also known as postnasal drainage, occurs when mucus from the nose and sinuses drips down the back of the throat.

What are causes of postnasal drip?

It can be caused by allergies, sinus infections, colds, nonallergic rhinitis, or other conditions that increase mucus production, such as acid reflux.
What are the symptoms of postnasal drip?

  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Throat clearing
  • Hoarseness of voice
  • Sensation of a lump in the throat

Treatment of postnasal drip

The first step to treating the postnasal drip is to identify the underlying cause. A board-certified allergist can help evaluate for allergies and recommend a treatment plan. Treatment options will depend on the underlying cause, but may include antihistamines, nasal sprays, nasal irritation, acid reflux medications, or allergy shots.
