Sports Injuries

What is it?

Many types of sports injuries can occur involving the foot and/or ankle, including but not limited to:

  • Ankle sprains
  • Achilles tendon injuries
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Stress fractures
  • Turf toe
  • Ankle fractures
  • Metatarsal fractures
  • Sprains and strains
  • Sever’s Disease
  • Peroneal tendon injuries

Sports injuries can impact the bones, joints, muscles, ligaments, and/or tendons of the foot and ankle. Injuries can include bone and/or joint fractures (or breaks), sprains or strains to soft tissue, or dislocations.

What are the causes?

There can be a large number of causes that contribute to a sports injury. Direct impact or forceful twisting can lead to traumatic injuries to the foot and ankle. Overuse can lead to any number of injuries including stress fractures, tendonitis, or plantar fasciitis. Poor biomechanics, improper footwear, muscle weakness or tightness, lack of stretching or warming up before physical activity, insufficient training, previous injuries, or inadequate injury rehabilitation can all contribute to sports injuries.

What are the symptoms?

The symptoms depend on the type of sports injury experienced. They can range from mild pain and discomfort to severe and excruciating pain. The severity of your symptoms will determine how immediately you need to be seen by a doctor. Some sports injuries such as minor sprains can be addressed at home with rest and ice, while other more traumatic injuries such as fractures or tears need to be addressed by a medical professional right away. If you feel you need immediate medical attention, please don’t hesitate to call 9-1-1.

What is the diagnosis procedure?

The diagnosis depends on the type of sports injury.

What are the treatment options?

The treatment depends on the type of sports injury.
