Toe and Metatarsal Fractures

What are Toe and Metatarsal Fractures and what causes them to occur?

Toe and metatarsal fractures are common injuries, often occurring due to trauma. Trauma can include stubbing your toe or dropping a heavy object on your foot.

Symptoms of Toe and Metatarsal Fractures:

A fracture in the toes or metatarsals can cause several symptoms including:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Difficulty when walking

Diagnosis for Toe and Metatarsal Fractures:

Routine x-rays and usually sufficient in diagnosing a fracture. A CT-scan or MRI may also be used to rule out other injuries when needed. Your doctor may also order imaging of the foot that is not affected to get a baseline for comparison.

Treatment for Toe and Metatarsal Fractures:

Treatment for these fractures will often involve conservative measures to begin with. Your doctor may recommend rest, ice, elevation, and immobilization of the affected area with the help of splint or cast. In more sever cases, surgery may be recommended to realign the bones and promote proper healing. It’s important to seek prompt medical attention if you suspect a toe or metatarsal fracture to prevent further complications and ensure proper healing.
