What causes wrist pain?
Damage to any parts of your wrist can cause pain and affect your ability to use your wrist and hand. The most common causes of wrist pain include:
- Sudden impact
- Repetitive stress
- Osteoarthritis
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Ganglion cysts
What are symptoms of wrist pain?
Tendonitis pain can appear gradually or suddenly and travel to other areas of the wrist or hand. Movement of these areas may be limited due to pain and swelling. Other common symptoms you may experience include:
- Weak grip
- Tenderness on side of wrist.
- Swelling in wrist.
- Pain when moving thumb and wrist.
- Squeaking or creaking sound when tendons move in wrist.
When should I seek help for wrist pain?
Seek help from a hand specialist if you experience pain or any of these symptoms in your hand or wrist:
- Joint stiffness
- Swelling
- Numbness
- Trouble gripping things.
- Limited movement
Not all wrist pain requires medical care. Minor sprains and strains usually can be treated with ice, rest and pain medications. If your pain and swelling lasts longer than a few days, see your healthcare provider.
