What are hand and wrist ligament repairs and reconstructions?

The wrist and hand are made up of many bones and have many ligaments and tendons that provide stability and movement. When a ligament or tendon is torn or injured, surgical intervention may be required to repair function to the wrist or hand. This outpatient procedure mends torn ligaments and tendons caused by things like accidents, injuries, or osteoarthritis. 

In cases where the ligament is completely torn, reconstruction may be needed. The ligament usually needs to be reconstructed when the ligament damage is noted after a period of 6 months or more after the initial injury.

Who needs a hand and wrist ligament repair or reconstruction?

An accident, such as a fall onto an outstretched hand or direct blow to the hand may cause a hand or wrist ligament to tear or become injured. Osteoarthritis, the degenerating of bones, may also make patients more susceptible to injury. Hand or wrist ligament injuries may be accompanied by any of the following symptoms:

  • Pain
  • Stiffness
  • Swelling
  • Weakness

What should I expect during a hand and wrist ligament repair or reconstruction?

During surgery, your provider will locate the injured ligament where a tendon graft will be used to replace the torn ligament. This tendon is typically taken from the bottom of the same wrist used to replace the torn ligament. Your surgeon will then place metal pins to support the repair while it heals.

Following surgery, your surgeon will place a cast or splint over the wrist until it has healed. The metal pins are removed typically 6 to 8 weeks after the surgery. You will be prescribed antibiotics to prevent infection and reduce pain and swelling.

Although they are uncommon, there are certain risks associated with the repair and reconstruction of the hand and wrist ligaments, including:

  • Infection
  • Swelling
  • Damage to nearby nerves or tissues.
  • Irritation from foreign material, such as metal pins.
  • Stiffness
