Injury Prevention Techniques

What are injury prevention techniques?

Injury prevention techniques in occupational and hand therapy are strategies and exercises designed to reduce the risk of injuries to the hands, wrists, and upper extremities. These techniques focus on improving strength, flexibility, and ergonomics to protect against strain, overuse, or trauma during daily activities, work, or sports.

These techniques are beneficial for:

  • Individuals at risk of repetitive strain injuries
  • Athletes
  • Workers in manual labor or desk jobs
  • Individuals with past injuries or surgeries
  • Individuals with arthritis or other chronic conditions

Your occupational therapist will assess your hand strength, range of motion, and activity habits. You’ll learn proper posture, ergonomic adjustments, and safe techniques for tasks, along with customized exercise programs to enhance strength and flexibility. Hands-on training and equipment recommendations, such as braces or supportive tools, may also be provided to ensure ongoing protection.
