What is vertigo?
If you are experiencing any dizziness, any imbalances, nausea and feel as if the world is spinning around you, you may be experiencing vertigo. The cause of vertigo will vary between all patients but more often than not it is caused due to an issues with your central nervous system or inner ear problems.
How can physical therapy help vertigo?
In order to counteract vertigo, a physical therapist will likely use vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT). VRT is used when needing to manage and balance issues or dizziness. Since vertigo typically involves inner ear issues, you will not only meet with a physical therapist to evaluate balance, strength and gait, you will also meet with an audiologist to determine how well the vestibular part of your inner ear is functioning.
Once you start therapy appointments, the treatment you receive will be customized to your needs. For some that may include specific stretching and strengthening exercises. For others, it might be focused on eye movement control or balance training.
Benefits of VRT?
Similar to any other form of physical therapy, it is important to stay consistent with any exercises your PT provides you. Be sure to communicate any new symptoms you are experiencing. Your PT will take this information and adjust your recovery plan as needed. By staying consistent with VRT you will likely start to experience:
- Increased strength and flexibility (if this was the focus in your therapy sessions)
- Decreased dizziness, imbalances and nausea
- Vision stabilization (if applicable)
