Eczema, Psoriasis and Other Chronic Skin Conditions

Chronic skin conditions can be frustrating and uncomfortable for those who suffer from them. These conditions can be chronic and often require ongoing management and treatment. Some common chronic skin conditions include exzema, psoriasis, dermatitis and chronic lichen simplex.

What is eczema?

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition that causes inflammation and itching. It can occur in both adults and children and is often linked to allergies or asthma. Eczema can appear as red, dry, and scaly patches on the skin that may be painful and itchy. Dyshidrotic eczema is a specific type of eczema that affects the hands and feet, causing small, fluid-filled blisters.

How do you treat eczema?

Treatment for eczema often involves moisturizing the skin and avoiding irritants and triggers such as harsh soaps or fabrics. Topical corticosteroids may also be prescribed to reduce inflammation and itching. In some cases, light therapy or oral medications may be necessary.

What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is another chronic skin condition that causes red, scaly patches on the skin that can be painful. It is an autoimmune disorder, meaning the body's immune system attacks healthy cells.

What are psoriasis symptoms?

Common symptoms of psoriasis include:

•    A patchy rash – appearance may vary widely from spots of scaling similar to dandruff to major rashes over a large portion of the body
•    Rashes that vary in color – for brown or Black skin it may appear purple with gray scale. On white skin it will appear pink or red with silver scale
•    Small scaling spots (more common in children)
•    Dry, cracked skin
•    Itching, burning or soreness
•    Cyclic rashes that flare up for a few weeks to a few months and then subside

How do you treat psoriasis?

Treatments are available to help you manage symptoms and will vary for each person. Treatment for psoriasis often involves topical medications such as corticosteroids, vitamin D analogues, or retinoids. Light therapy and oral medications may also be prescribed for more severe cases. Trying out lifestyle changes and coping strategies can assist you in living more comfortably with psoriasis.

What is dermatitis?

Dermatitis is a broad term that includes a variety of skin conditions, such as contact dermatitis (caused by contact with an irritant) and seborrheic dermatitis (caused by an overgrowth of yeast on the skin). Dermatitis often causes itching and inflammation and/or scaling of the skin.  Treatment for dermatitis often involves identifying and avoiding triggers and using moisturizers and corticosteroids to manage symptoms.

What is chronic lichen simplex?

Chronic lichen simplex is a skin condition characterized by thick, scaly patches that can be extremely itchy. Treatment for chronic lichen simplex includes managing symptoms with moisturizers and topical corticosteroids. In some cases, oral medications may be necessary to manage itching and inflammation.

Chronic skin conditions can have a significant impact on quality of life, including social and emotional well-being. It is important for patients to work closely with their dermatologist to develop an effective treatment plan that manages symptoms and minimizes risks associated with treatment.
