Wrinkle Injections

What are wrinkle injections?

Wrinkle injections reduce the activity of muscles in your face that cause wrinkles. They temporarily paralyze, or freeze, the muscles that control your facial expressions to soften or remove common wrinkles like forehead lines, frown lines and crow’s feet.

The number of injections and amount of product distributed will depend on the specific treatment area or areas and the severity of wrinkles or concerns being addressed. Dysport and Botox injections are available through The Iowa Clinic Medical Spa and Dermatology departments.

How long do wrinkle injections last?

The effects of injections can last for several months. In general, results last three to four months but can last up to six months for some patients. Treatments can be repeated as desired. Your healthcare provider can help you to select the appropriate treatment, units required and amount of time between visits based on your unique needs.

What should I expect when getting wrinkle injections?

Both treatments — Botox and Dysport — are outpatient procedures and discomfort is usually mild. You may feel a slight sting but the needles used for injections are very small. A topical numbing agent might be applied before giving the injections.

You can return to work or other activities immediately after. To reduce swelling, bruising or redness, we recommend you avoid physical exercise for 24 hours, stay upright for at least 4 hours after the treatment and don’t rub or put pressure on the treatment area for at least 12 hours.

What are the risks in getting wrinkle injections?

Wrinkle injection treatments are generally safe when administered by a licensed healthcare provider. Minor issues improve in a day or two but possible side effects include mild pain at the treatment site, headache, neck pain, indigestion, drooping eyelids or eye irritation and redness. Ask your healthcare provider if Botox injections are right for you.

Do not seek wrinkle injection treatments if you are pregnant, breast feeding, suffer from drooping eyelids, weak facial muscles or neuromuscular disease.

What are the differences between BOTOX and Dysport?

BOTOX Injections

BOTOX is one of the most popular cosmetic procedures. A purified form of botulinum toxin is injected into your wrinkles to block the nerve signals and limit muscle activity.

BOTOX is a temporary solution to reduce or remove moderate to severe wrinkles caused by muscle movements. Full results are visible within 10 to 14 days post injections.

Dysport® Injections

Dysport is facial injection specifically for the frown lines between your eyebrows. It minimizes the wrinkles on your forehead without freezing the facial muscles on the rest of your face. Results take effect two to three days after treatment and last up to four months.

While Botox has been around longer and is more widely known, both products are safe and effective options for improving lines and wrinkles on the face. Please consult with your medical provider to determine which option is the best choice for you.

*A FREE consultation is required for all aesthetic procedures. Injectables require a $50 fee, that is applied to your total cost after service.
