Balloon Sinuplasty

What is Balloon Sinuplasty?

Balloon sinuplasty is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to treat chronic sinusitis (chronic sinus infections). Traditional treatments for chronic sinusitis include medication, such as antibiotics, nasal sprays or steroids.  However, in cases or recurring infections or traditional treatment methods do not provide adequate relief, balloon sinuplasty may be a treatment option for you.

What should I expect during a balloon sinuplasty?

Balloon Sinuplasty can be performed in-office with local anesthesia. During the procedure, a small balloon catheter is inserted into the sinus cavity and inflated, expanding the sinus opening and allowing for better drainage and ventilation.

Who should get a Balloon Sinuplasty?

Many people mistake the symptoms of chronic sinusitis with seasonal allergies or common cold symptoms, so it is important to work with your ENT provider to determine if the symptoms you’re experiencing are caused by chronic sinusitis. From there, it can be determined if you are a good candidate for Balloon Sinuplasty.

What are the risks of Balloon Sinuplasty?

While the risks for the procedure are low, as with any medical procedure, there are potential risks. Some of the most common risks include:

  • Pain or discomfort during or after the procedure
  • Minor bleeding
  • Infection
  • Swelling or bruising
  • Eye injury (rare)

It's important to discuss the potential risks and benefits of balloon sinuplasty with your ENT provider to determine if it's the right treatment option for you.

What does recovery from a balloon sinuplasty look like?

Recovery from balloon sinuplasty is typically quicker and less painful than traditional sinus surgery. Most patients can return to normal activities within 24-48 hours after the procedure. However, it's important to follow your ENT provider’s post-operative instructions and attend all follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing.

What is the success rate of Balloon Sinuplasty?

Balloon sinuplasty has a high success rate for treating chronic sinusitis. According to clinical studies, up to 95% of patients reported significant improvement in their sinus symptoms after undergoing balloon sinuplasty.
