Tubal Ligation

What is a tubal ligation?

Tubal ligation, also known as having your tubes tied or tubal sterilization is a surgical procedure to close off the fallopian tubes, preventing sperm from reaching and fertilizing eggs. It is a permanent form of birth control.

How is tubal ligation performed?

Tubal ligation can be performed under general, spinal, or local anesthesia. The doctor will make a small incision in the abdomen or near the navel. Then, a laparoscope, a thin, flexible tube with a camera on the end, is inserted through the incision. The doctor will use the laparoscope to view the fallopian tubes and other pelvic organs.

Next, the doctor will make a second incision in the abdomen and insert a long, thin instrument through the incision to close off the fallopian tubes. There are a few different ways to do this, including:

  • Clipping: The doctor places clips or rings on the fallopian tubes to close them off.
Tying: The doctor ties the fallopian tubes in a knot.
  • Burning: The doctor uses heat to seal the fallopian tubes shut.

Once the fallopian tubes are closed off, the doctor will remove the laparoscope and instruments and stitch up the incisions.

What to expect after tubal ligation

Most women are able to go home the same day as their tubal ligation surgery. You may experience some cramping and bleeding in the days after surgery. It is important to avoid strenuous activity and sexual intercourse for at least two weeks after surgery.

You will still have periods after tubal ligation, but you will not be able to get pregnant.

Tubal ligation is a very safe procedure, but there are some risks associated with it, such as:
