Adolescent Gynecology

What is adolescent gynecology?

Adolescent gynecology is a branch of medicine that focuses on the health of the female reproductive system from puberty through age 21. Adolescent gynecologists are trained to provide care for a wide range of issues, including:

  • Menstrual cycle problems
  • Vulvovaginal infections
  • Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
  • Birth control counseling and contraception
  • Breast health
  • Pelvic pain
  • Adolescent pregnancy

When should my daughter start seeing an adolescent gynecologist?

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that all girls see an adolescent gynecologist for the first time between the ages of 13 and 15. This visit is a great opportunity for girls to learn about their bodies, ask questions, and get comfortable with seeing a gynecologist.

What should I expect during a visit?

During an adolescent gynecology visit, the doctor will:

  • Ask questions about the girl's medical history and current health.
  • Perform a physical exam, which may include a pelvic exam and breast exam.
  • Order any necessary tests
  • The doctor will also talk to the patient about her sexual health and answer any questions she has about birth control, STIs, and other topics.

What are common adolescent gynecologic problems?

Some of the most common adolescent gynecology problems include:

  • Menstrual cycle problems: Many girls experience irregular menstrual cycles in the first few years after puberty. This is normal, but it is important to talk to a doctor if her periods are very heavy, painful, or infrequent.
  • Vulvovaginal infections: Vulvovaginal infections are common in girls and young women. These infections can be caused by bacteria, yeast, or other organisms. Treatment usually involves medication and lifestyle changes.
  • STIs: It is important for girls to get tested for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) regularly, especially if they are sexually active.
  • Birth control: Girls have a variety of birth control options to choose from. A doctor can help them choose the best option for their individual needs.
  • Breast health: It is important for young girls to learn about breast health and breast cancer screening.
  • Pelvic pain: Pelvic pain is a common problem among adolescents and young adults. There are many causes of pelvic pain, including menstrual cramps, endometriosis, and ovarian cysts.
  • Adolescent pregnancy: Adolescent pregnancy can be a challenging experience, but there are resources available to help pregnant girls and their families.
