Neuromodulation

What is sacral neuromodulation?

Sacral neuromodulation is for women who suffer from overactive bladder symptoms such as urinary frequency, urgency, and incontinence, as well urinary retention and fecal incontinence. According to the International Urogynecological Association research shows that 80% of patients with Overactive Bladder show improvement with this treatment.

How does sacral neuromodulation work?

The sacral nerves are located near the tailbone and control bowel and bladder function. If the nerves are not communicating properly with the brain, the nerves cannot work properly. Sacral neuromodulation works on mending this communication problem by using small electrical pulses to stimulate the nerves. This in turn helps the communication pathway between the nerves and the brain. Sacral Neuromodulation does NOT involve the spinal cord.

Your urogynecologist will discuss the risks and benefits of sacral neuromodulation, how the treatment is performed, and help you determine if this is the right treatment option for you.
