Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT)

What is testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) and why is it needed?

Testosterone is a sex hormone that plays an essential role in the formation of male growth, including the development of male sex organs, sperm production, bone growth, muscle strength, fat distribution, libido, mood, and facial and pubic hair. As a man ages, testosterone levels naturally and gradually drop, leading to a variety of symptoms, including:

  • Low libido
  • Balding
  • Loss of body and facial hair
  • Brittle bones or low bone density
  • Emotional changes

For some men, testosterone replacement therapy might help improve sexual function.

Testosterone replacement therapy is available in several forms, including gels, injections, implants, and skin and mouth patches.

It’s important that you talk with your provider about the risks and benefits of testosterone replacement therapy before you embark on life-long therapy.

What are the risks of testosterone replacement therapy?

Risks from taking testosterone replacement therapy in aging men can include:

  • Acne
  • Enlarging breast tissue
  • Worsening sleep apnea
  • Shrinkage of the testicle or sperm production
  • Increased risk of blood clots
  • Increased noncancerous growth of prostate, otherwise known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)
  • Worsening congestive heart failure

How do I find out if I have low testosterone and if I’m a candidate for testosterone replacement therapy?

It’s important that you talk with your provider about any concerning symptoms you have as you age. A simple blood test can help determine your testosterone levels and can give insight to why you might be experiencing the symptoms you are.

If test results confirm an abnormally low testosterone level, your doctor may recommend replacement therapy treatment.
