What is InterStim and how does it work?
InterStim is an FDA-approved implant that helps with the symptoms and treatment of overactive bladder. Using nerve stimulation, this small device sends electrical impulses to the sacral nerves in the lower back to help decrease the symptoms associated with an overactive bladder.
Once an InterStim is placed, typically under the skin in the hip or buttocks area, you will use a remote to adjust the nerve stimulation sent from it to your sacral nerves that will then reduce or eliminate your overactive bladder symptoms. This procedure is done in an outpatient setting and full recovery time is around 6 weeks, although most patients are able to return to their normal routine shortly after surgery.
Why would someone need an InterStim implant?
The symptoms associated with an overactive bladder can be life-consuming, ranging from frequent bathroom trips to leakage. A permanent InterStim implant might be the answer to symptoms if conservative medications and therapies don’t work.
What are the risks of an InterStim implant?
The risks of having an InterStim implanted on your body include the following:
- Skin irritation or infection at the implant site
- Pain at the implant site
- Changes in your urinary or bowel function
- Device problem or wire movement
- Jolting or shocking stimulations
Is InterStim effective?
Most InterStim patients find their overactive bladder symptoms improve following placement. Roughly 80 percent of patients report a 50 percent or greater improvement in the quality of life.
