Spondyloarthritis

What is spondyloarthritis?

Spondyloarthritis is a form of arthritis that specifically targets the spine. One of the more common types of spondyloarthritis is Axial Spondyloarthritis which can lead to certain forms of spinal fusion.

What causes spondyloarthritis?

Similar to many other rheumatic conditions, spondyloarthritis doesn’t have an exact cause but it has been found that genetics, environment and your immune system are linked to the disease. If you have been diagnosed with psoriasis, Chron’s disease or ulcerative colitis you are at higher risk of also having spondyloarthritis.

What are spondyloarthritis symptoms?

The most common symptom experienced with spondyloarthritis is low back pain. Due to nerve connections in your lower back, this pain could also radiate to your arms and legs. Additional symptoms include:

  • Joint stiffness
  • Overall body fatigue
  • Heel pain
  • Psoriasis (skin and nail rash/changes)

How is spondyloarthritis diagnosed?

The diagnosis process for spondyloarthritis will start with a review of your health history, your family health history and a physical exam to determine where and how heavily symptoms are impacting you. Once complete, a blood test and/or image testing may be required to help provide a more clear internal diagnosis.

What are spondyloarthritis treatment options?

Since there are different types of spondyloarthritis, the treatment options will vary. It is likely that all patients will be recommended to start physical therapy to help with mobility and range of motion of the lower back (or other affected joint). For minor cases it may be recommended to take a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAIDs). Additional treatment options include disease modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and biologics. If you’re severely suffering from spondyloarthritis, hip replacement may be recommended to help ease pain, stiffness and mobility.
