What is tofacitinib citrate?

Tofacitinib citrate, also known as Xeljanz, is a medication used for various different autoimmune conditions, however, it is most commonly used to treat rheumatoid arthritis. It works to block the Janus kinases (JAKs) enzyme which can cause joint inflammation. Other conditions that may be prescribed tofacitinib citrate include:

  • Psoriatic arthritis
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Juvenile arthritis
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Organ transplant (helps prevent organ rejection)
  • Psoriasis

If you have been diagnosed with any of the conditions above and have been prescribed a medication that doesn’t seem to be working, tofacitinib citrate is typically then prescribed.

  • Headaches (only need to notate if headaches are not common for you)
  • Upper respiratory tract infection
  • Diarrhea
  • Increased risk of infection or shingles
  • Increased risk of lymphoma
