Nissen Fundoplication

What is Nissen fundoplication?

Nissen fundoplication is a surgical procedure commonly used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and alleviate symptoms of chronic acid reflux.

What can I expect during Nissen fundoplication procedure?

Nissen fundoplication involves wrapping the upper portion of the stomach (fundus) around the lower esophagus to strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) and prevent the backward flow of stomach acid into the esophagus.

In most cases, Nissen fundoplication is performed using minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques. Several small incisions are made in the abdomen through which a laparoscope and specialized surgical instruments are inserted. The surgeon carefully dissects and mobilizes the upper portion of the stomach (fundus) and surrounding structures to create a wrap around the lower esophagus. The fundus of the stomach is then wrapped around the lower esophagus to create a 360-degree "wrap" or "sleeve," effectively reinforcing the lower esophageal sphincter and preventing acid reflux. After the fundoplication is completed, the incisions are closed, and the surgical instruments are removed.

What is the recovery for Nissen fundoplication?

Most patients can expect to stay in the hospital for 1 to 2 days following the procedure for observation and pain management. Initially, a liquid or soft diet may be recommended to allow the surgical site to heal and gradually progress to a regular diet as tolerated.

Pain and discomfort at the surgical sites are common after Nissen fundoplication. Pain medications prescribed by the surgeon can help manage postoperative discomfort. Patients are typically advised to avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for several weeks following surgery to allow for proper healing.

What are the benefits of Nissen fundoplication?

Nissen fundoplication offers several potential benefits for individuals suffering from chronic acid reflux, including:

  • Symptom Relief: Nissen fundoplication can provide significant and long-lasting relief from symptoms such as heartburn, regurgitation, and difficulty swallowing.
  • Reduced Reliance on Medications: For patients who have been dependent on medications such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to manage their reflux symptoms, Nissen fundoplication may offer an alternative solution, reducing or eliminating the need for medication.
  • Improved Quality of Life: By effectively controlling acid reflux, Nissen fundoplication can improve overall quality of life by allowing patients to enjoy meals without discomfort and sleep more comfortably without nighttime reflux symptoms.
