Laparoscopic Kidney Surgery

What is laparoscopic kidney surgery?

When undergoing certain surgeries, you may end up with large incisions due to the nature of the surgery. With laparoscopic kidney surgery, you instead will receive a series of small incisions. These incisions are small enough that they fit a little tube with a camera and light to navigate around the lower abdomen to view the kidneys.

What are risks of laparoscopic kidney surgery?

As with many other surgeries, there are various risks associated with laparoscopic kidney surgery. These risks include but are not limited to:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Blood clots
  • Allergic reaction to anesthesia
  • Injury to other organs
  • Pneumonia

What should I expect from laparoscopic kidney surgery?

Preparing for surgery may look different from patient to patient based on health history. It is likely that your surgeon will give you instructions on when stop eating prior to surgery as well as what medications to cease prior to surgery. Be sure to follow instructions to allow for the best possible surgery outcome.

You will stay in the hospital following your surgery. The length of your stay will vary based on how well you are recovering. After you are released your nurses or doctor will provide diet and exercise restrictions (if applicable) for continued recovery. Once you have fully recovered, you will be able to return to all activities as normal.
