Seborrheic Keratosis and Other Benign Skin Lesions

What is seborrheic keratosis?

Seborrheic keratosis is a common skin condition that occurs most frequently in older individuals. It is a benign growth that usually appears on the face, chest, shoulders, and back. These skin lesions can be various colors, usually brown, black, or light tan, and may be flat or raised. They are often described as having a "stuck-on" appearance, with a waxy or scaly surface.

What are other benign skin lesions?

Other benign skin lesions include moles, skin tags, and lipomas. Moles are typically dark, round spots on the skin that may be raised or flat. Skin tags are small, flesh-colored growths that are attached to the skin by a stalk. Lipomas are soft, rubbery growths that are typically located just under the skin.

Moles and skin tags are typically harmless and do not require treatment unless they become irritated or uncomfortable. Lipomas may be removed if they grow to a large size or cause discomfort.

What are the symptoms of seborrheic keratoses?

Signs and symptoms of seborrheic keratoses might include:

  • Waxy or scaly bump, typically on the face, chest, shoulders or back
  • Can appear as a flat growth or as a slightly raised bump

  • May show up as a single growth or multiple growths, scattered or clustered
  • Varied in color, ranging from light tan to brown or black

How do you treat seborrheic keratoses?

What causes seborrheic keratosis?

The cause of seborrheic keratosis is unknown, but it is believed to be a result of a genetic predisposition. Exposure to sunlight may also contribute to the development of these growths.
