Malignant Melanoma

What is malignant melanoma?

Malignant melanoma (often referred to as cancerous melanoma) is a serious form of skin cancer that arises from the cells that produce pigment in the skin. It is the most dangerous type of skin cancer and can spread quickly to other parts of the body if left untreated.

What are the symptoms of malignant melanoma?

The most common symptom of cancerous melanoma is a change in the appearance of a mole or the appearance of a new mole on the skin. Other symptoms may include:

  • Irregular or asymmetrical borders of the mole
  • Changes in color, size or texture of the mole
  • Bleeding or crusting on the surface of the mole

If you notice any changes in the appearance of a mole or the appearance of a new mole on your skin, it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible.

How do you treat melanoma?

The treatment options for cancerous melanoma depend on the stage and location of the cancer. In the early stages of the disease, surgical removal of the affected area may be the best option. This may be followed by radiation therapy or chemotherapy to help kill any remaining cancer cells.

For more advanced cases of cancerous melanoma, other treatment options may include immunotherapy, targeted therapy, or combination therapies. Your doctor will work with you to determine the best treatment approach for your individual needs.

What are the risk factors for melanoma?

The primary risk factor for cancerous melanoma is exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds. Other risk factors may include:

  • Family history of cancerous melanoma
  • Having fair skin or a large number of moles
  • Weakened immune system.

Malignant melanoma is a serious form of skin cancer that can be life-threatening if left untreated.
